Overview and Geography

The Bab el-Mandeb Strait, whose name means "Gate of Tears" or "Gate of Grief" in Arabic, stands as one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints. Located between Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula and Djibouti and Eritrea in the Horn of Africa, this narrow waterway connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden and extends onward to the Indian Ocean. At its narrowest point, the strait measures only 26 kilometers (approximately 20 miles) wide, making it a bottleneck of enormous geopolitical and economic significance. The three islands of Perim, Greater Hanish, and Lesser Hanish dot the waters, adding to its complex strategic landscape.

The geography of the Bab el-Mandeb has shaped its role in global commerce for centuries. Its position between Africa and Asia naturally placed it along ancient trade routes, and its modern significance stems from its connection to the Suez Canal, which sits about 310 kilometers to the north. Together, these two waterways form a critical corridor linking Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

Global Shipping and Trade Volume

The Bab el-Mandeb ranks as the third-busiest oil chokepoint globally, following the Strait of Malacca and the Strait of Hormuz. Before the recent disruptions caused by Houthi attacks, approximately 12 percent of global seaborne trade passed through the strait, making it essential to international commerce. The channel accommodates several categories of vessels: container ships carrying manufactured goods and consumer products, oil tankers transporting crude oil and petroleum products, bulk carriers moving grain and other commodities, and general cargo vessels.
