Captain Matthew Flinders is remembered as one of the most accomplished navigators and cartographers in the long history of European maritime exploration. A son of a Lincolnshire surgeon who first dreamed of the sea after reading Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe, Flinders rose through the ranks of the Royal Navy to lead the first complete circumnavigation of the Australian continent and to produce the first reliable general chart of its coastline. He spent only forty years on earth, six and a half of them as a prisoner of the French on the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, and yet in that compressed lifetime he accomplished more in the field of practical surveying and ocean cartography than any of his English contemporaries. The maps he made of the southern coast, the eastern coast, and the Gulf of Carpentaria remained the standard navigational charts of those waters for the better part of a century, and the name he persuaded the British Admiralty to adopt for the great southern continent, Australia, became the permanent designation of a future nation of more than twenty-six million people.

The question of what Matthew Flinders discovered and accomplished is bound up with a particular moment in the history of European geographic knowledge. When Flinders sailed for the southern hemisphere in 1801 aboard HMS Investigator, the coastline of the great southern continent was a patchwork of partial, inconsistent, and in many places imaginary cartography. The Dutch navigators of the seventeenth century had charted the northern, western, and southern shores in piecemeal voyages from the East Indies. Captain James Cook had traced the eastern coast in 1770. But the entire southern shore between Cape Leeuwin and the Bass Strait was still unsurveyed, the relationship between Van Diemen's Land and the mainland remained disputed until Flinders and George Bass settled it, and there was no continuous chart that joined the various Dutch, French, and British surveys into a coherent picture. Flinders set out to fill the gaps. By the time HMS Investigator returned to Port Jackson in June 1803 after the first complete circuit of the continent, the rough outline of modern Australia was visible on a single sheet of paper for the first time.

Early Life and Family Origins in Lincolnshire

Matthew Flinders was born on 16 March 1774 in the small market town of Donington in the Lincolnshire fenland of eastern England. The Flinders family had been settled in the area for several generations and held a respectable place in the local community as country surgeons and apothecaries. Matthew's grandfather, also named Matthew, had practised medicine in nearby Spalding before settling in Donington in the middle of the eighteenth century. His father, also Matthew Flinders, had inherited the practice and lived in a substantial house in the High Street where he combined the duties of surgeon, apothecary, and man-midwife for the surrounding farming community. The Flinders household was therefore neither aristocratic nor poor. It belonged to that prosperous and self-improving English provincial middle class which produced so many of the practical scientists, surveyors, engineers, and naval officers who made the British nation what it became during the long eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Matthew's mother was Susanna Ward, the surgeon's first wife, who came from a Spalding family. Susanna gave birth to Matthew in 1774, then to two more surviving children, Susanna and Elizabeth, before dying of consumption in 1783 when Matthew was nine years old. The loss of his mother at that age was a wound that Flinders carried with him for the rest of his life, though he wrote about it rarely. His father remarried in 1783 to Elizabeth Weekes, a young woman from Donington whose family were grocers in the town. The second marriage produced more children, including Samuel Ward Flinders, who followed his elder brother into the Royal Navy and accompanied Matthew on the Investigator voyage as a junior lieutenant. The two brothers were close throughout their lives despite the difference in years and rank, and Matthew's letters to Samuel form one of the most valuable sources for his Australian years.

The Lincolnshire of Matthew Flinders's childhood was a flat, marshy, only partly drained landscape that had been transformed during the previous century by the great drainage schemes of the seventeenth century engineers. The fens around Donington had been reclaimed from a watery wilderness into productive arable and grazing land, but they retained a wildness and an isolation that shaped the imaginations of the children who grew up among them. Wide skies, low horizons, distant church spires, the murmur of windmills, and the regular passage of barges along the drainage channels were the visual furniture of the young Flinders's world. Donington itself was a prosperous agricultural town centred on its parish church of St Mary and the Holy Rood, where a handsome statue of Matthew Flinders now stands in the churchyard. The town had a grammar school of good reputation, a tradition of literacy and self-improvement among its tradesmen and small farmers, and a connection to the wider world through the wool and grain trade that flowed through the nearby port of Boston on the Lincolnshire coast of England.

The Flinders family combined the values of provincial respectability with an unusually strong vein of intellectual ambition. Matthew Flinders senior was a member of the local literary and scientific society, kept a substantial library, and corresponded with medical colleagues across the country. He intended that his eldest son should follow him into medicine, and the practical training that surgeons and apothecaries received in the late eighteenth century included a great deal of natural history, chemistry, botany, and basic astronomy. Matthew was an apt pupil. He absorbed his father's interests and added several of his own, particularly mathematics and reading. From an early age he showed a meticulous, methodical, observational mind, the kind of temperament that would later make him the obsessive perfectionist of marine surveying.

Childhood and the Reading of Robinson Crusoe

The decisive event of Matthew Flinders's childhood, by his own later account, was his discovery at the age of eleven or twelve of Daniel Defoe's novel Robinson Crusoe. The book had been published more than half a century earlier in 1719 and had passed through innumerable editions by the time it reached the bookshelves of the Donington grammar school. To a fenland boy whose horizons were bounded by drainage ditches and church spires, the story of a shipwrecked English mariner cast away on a tropical island, building his own world from the wreckage of civilization and surviving by his ingenuity, was the kind of imaginative explosion that changes the course of a life. Flinders later told friends that from the moment he closed the last page of Robinson Crusoe he knew he was destined for the sea. He resisted his father's plans for a medical career with quiet persistence, and over the next two years he made up his mind in private that he would somehow find a way into the Royal Navy.

The decision was not an easy one to put into effect. The Royal Navy of the 1780s was a closed and competitive institution that recruited its officers principally through patronage. A boy from a country surgeon's family in rural Lincolnshire had no obvious route into the service. The usual path required the influence of an established naval officer who would take a young man on board his ship as a captain's servant or midshipman, allowing him to begin accumulating the years of sea time required to qualify for a Lieutenant's examination. The Flinders family had no such naval connections. Matthew nevertheless began to prepare himself with the methodical seriousness that would mark his entire career. He read books on navigation and seamanship that he found in his father's library and in the shops of Boston. He learned the rudiments of practical mathematics, including spherical trigonometry, the essential skill of a deep-sea navigator. He memorized the construction of celestial spheres and the use of the sextant. By the time he was fifteen he had taught himself the basic theoretical foundations of his future profession.

The opportunity Matthew had been waiting for came in 1789 through a distant family connection. A cousin of his stepmother's was on friendly terms with Captain Thomas Pasley of the Royal Navy, and through this chain of introductions the fifteen-year-old Matthew Flinders was offered a place as a captain's servant on a man-of-war. The offer was accepted at once. His father, reconciled at last to his son's rejection of a medical career, paid for his outfit and provided him with a small allowance. In the early summer of 1789 Matthew Flinders left Donington for the south coast of England, where he joined his first ship and began the apprenticeship that would lead him to the bottom of the world.

Early Royal Navy Service Under Captain Pasley

Matthew Flinders's first years in the Royal Navy were spent largely in the routine duties of peacetime cruising and home waters. He served under Captain Pasley on HMS Scipio and HMS Bellerophon and was rated as a midshipman in May 1790. Captain Pasley took an interest in the studious young midshipman from Lincolnshire and encouraged his self-education. He gave Flinders access to his cabin library, instructed him in practical seamanship, and allowed him the unusual privilege of carrying out his own celestial observations alongside the ship's master. Flinders responded with the kind of devoted hard work that would mark his entire naval career. He kept careful private journals in which he recorded each day's lessons, his own astronomical calculations, the readings of the ship's chronometers, and the running observations of wind, weather, and current that were the daily diet of an apprentice navigator.

Captain Pasley also did something for Flinders that proved decisive. In 1791 he recommended his young midshipman to William Bligh, who was then organizing his second expedition to the Pacific to collect breadfruit plants from Tahiti for transplantation to the British West Indies. Bligh's first attempt to make this voyage in HMS Bounty had ended in 1789 with the famous mutiny of his crew off the island of Tofua. Bligh had survived a three thousand seven hundred nautical mile open boat voyage to the Dutch East Indies and had returned to England a controversial hero. The Admiralty, undeterred by the loss of Bounty, had organized a second expedition with two ships, HMS Providence and HMS Assistant, with Bligh again in command. Bligh wanted experienced midshipmen who were good at celestial navigation and could be relied upon to help with the meticulous surveying work that he intended to combine with his botanical mission. Pasley's recommendation of Flinders carried weight, and the seventeen-year-old midshipman was appointed to HMS Providence in 1791.

The Providence Expedition with Bligh

The Providence expedition was a formative experience for Matthew Flinders in ways that profoundly shaped the rest of his career. The voyage took two years from 1791 to 1793 and circumnavigated the globe, taking Flinders for the first time to the great southern oceans, to the tropics of the Pacific, to the Australian coast he would later make his own, and to the West Indies and home again. The expedition was not a voyage of discovery in the heroic sense but a meticulous combination of botany, hydrography, and commerce. Bligh was a difficult man personally but a navigator and surveyor of the very first rank, trained by Captain James Cook on the third voyage of Cook's career. He had served as Cook's sailing master on HMS Resolution from 1776 to 1779 and had been at Kealakekua Bay in February 1779 when Cook was killed. Bligh's approach to marine surveying combined rigorous celestial astronomy with running observations and detailed coastal sketches, and Flinders absorbed this Cook-school methodology directly from one of its leading practitioners.

HMS Providence sailed from Spithead in August 1791 and made the long passage south by way of Tenerife, the South Atlantic, and the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa. From the Cape Bligh sailed east into the Southern Ocean, picked up the prevailing westerlies, and made the long passage across the southern Indian Ocean to Van Diemen's Land. At Adventure Bay in southern Van Diemen's Land, the same anchorage Cook had used in 1777 and Bligh had used on the Bounty voyage in 1788, Providence and Assistant refilled their water casks, gathered firewood, and refreshed the crews. Flinders saw for the first time the dense temperate rainforest, the great gum trees, and the strange wildlife of Australia, and he later remembered the visit as the moment when his interest in the southern continent began. From Van Diemen's Land Providence sailed north through the recently discovered passage east of New Caledonia and on to Tahiti.

At Tahiti, Providence remained for several months while the expedition's botanists supervised the collection of more than two thousand breadfruit plants and a wide range of other tropical species. Flinders saw the Tahitian society that had so fascinated Cook and the early Pacific navigators, witnessed the elaborate ceremonies and rituals of the island chiefs, and made the kind of detailed personal observations that would later inform his own approach to encounters with indigenous peoples in Australia. From Tahiti, Providence sailed west into the dangerous coral reef country of the Torres Strait between northern Australia and New Guinea, where Bligh and his crew conducted some of the most careful surveying work of the entire voyage. Flinders was deeply involved in this work and watched the older navigator at his craft, learning the practical art of charting a previously unmapped tropical archipelago from running observations and small boat reconnaissance. The lessons of the Torres Strait survey would later prove invaluable when Flinders returned to the same waters as the commander of his own expedition.

After delivering the breadfruit plants to Jamaica in the West Indies, Providence completed her circumnavigation by way of the North American coast and returned to England in August 1793. Matthew Flinders was now nineteen years old. He had circumnavigated the globe, learned his craft from one of the best practical navigators in the Royal Navy, and seen the southern continent that would become his life's work. He was soon caught up in the great war that had just begun between revolutionary France and the kingdom of Great Britain. The next two years saw him serving on HMS Bellerophon under Pasley again, taking part in the great fleet action of the Glorious First of June in 1794 in which Lord Howe's Channel Fleet defeated the French Republican fleet in the eastern Atlantic. Flinders was at Pasley's side during the battle, witnessed the senior officer lose his leg to a French cannonball, and acquired the experience of a major fleet engagement that would shape his understanding of the Royal Navy of his day.

Appointment to Hms Reliance and Voyage to New South Wales

In early 1795 a new opportunity opened for Matthew Flinders. The colony of New South Wales, established at Port Jackson on the eastern coast of Australia by Captain Arthur Phillip in January 1788, had now passed beyond its first desperate years of near-starvation and was beginning the slow, painful process of consolidation. The British government had decided to send out a new governor, Captain John Hunter of the Royal Navy, to replace the interim administration that had run the colony since Phillip's departure in 1792. Hunter would sail in HMS Reliance, a small storeship and frigate-class vessel that was being prepared to carry him, his staff, and a substantial cargo of stores and livestock to Sydney. The Reliance needed officers, and Flinders, with his recent Pacific experience, was an obvious candidate. He was appointed master's mate on the Reliance in February 1795 and sailed for New South Wales later that same month.

The voyage of the Reliance from Plymouth to Port Jackson took most of 1795 and reached Sydney Cove in September of that year. Flinders kept a meticulous journal of the voyage, recording weather, currents, latitude, longitude, astronomical observations, and the practical challenges of a long deep-sea passage in a heavily loaded transport. Two other young men on the Reliance would prove decisive in his Australian career. One was George Bass, an English-born naval surgeon who shared with Flinders a country origin, a passion for exploration, and a temperament eager for adventure. The other was Bennelong, an Eora man from the Sydney region who had been taken to England by Governor Phillip in 1792 and was now being returned to his homeland. Bennelong had spent more than two years living in London, had been presented at the court of King George III, and had taken on a certain amount of the speech and manners of European society. The friendship that developed between Flinders and Bennelong during the long voyage to Sydney gave the young midshipman his first sustained contact with an Aboriginal Australian and shaped his later openness to indigenous peoples in a way that distinguishes his journals from those of many of his contemporaries.

The Reliance reached Port Jackson in September 1795 and Governor Hunter was duly installed in the residence at Sydney Cove. The Reliance was to remain in New South Wales for the next five years, serving as a colonial supply vessel and a base for the various exploratory expeditions that Hunter sponsored during his governorship. For Flinders, the arrival in Sydney marked the beginning of the second phase of his apprenticeship and the start of the partnership with George Bass that would produce the first systematic exploration of the southern coastline of the continent. Sydney in 1795 was a place of about three thousand European inhabitants, most of them convicts and military, scattered along the harbour and into the small farms then beginning to spread west toward the Hawkesbury River. The town was crude and dirty but full of energy and possibility, and the harbour itself was one of the great natural anchorages of the world. Flinders fell in love with the place at once, and for the next five years he made it his base of operations.

Early Explorations with George Bass

The friendship between Matthew Flinders and George Bass became one of the most productive partnerships in the history of Australian exploration. Bass had been born in 1771 in the Lincolnshire village of Aswarby near Sleaford. He had trained as a surgeon, qualified for naval service, and had used a personal interview with the Surgeon to the Fleet to secure the appointment to HMS Reliance. Like Flinders he had grown up in the wide skies and low horizons of the Lincolnshire countryside and had developed early a powerful longing for the wider world. He was tall, strong, energetic, intellectually adventurous, and entirely uninterested in the social hierarchies that often constrained the friendships of naval officers. With Flinders he found a kindred spirit, and during the autumn and winter of 1795 to 1796 the two men began to plan their first small boat expedition along the New South Wales coast.

The little vessel they used was a tiny boat with a single mast that the two friends called Tom Thumb, in self-mocking acknowledgement of its diminutive size. It was scarcely more than eight feet long, with room for the two officers and a boy named William Martin. In late October 1795 the three of them sailed Tom Thumb out of Port Jackson with the intention of exploring the unsurveyed coast south of Botany Bay. They reached the mouth of the Georges River, sailed up its previously unexplored estuary, and returned with the first careful chart of an important inland waterway south of Sydney. The trip was a modest success and demonstrated to the colonial administration the value of small boat reconnaissance as a tool of exploration. Governor Hunter authorized further such expeditions, and in March 1796 Flinders and Bass set out again in a larger boat, also called Tom Thumb, with William Martin again as their companion.

The second Tom Thumb expedition was a far more dangerous venture. The three men sailed south from Port Jackson, intending to explore a river that they had been told emptied into the sea about a hundred miles south of Sydney. They were caught by a heavy gale and forced into a sheltered bay where they met a small group of Aboriginal Australians, with whom they exchanged gifts and a few words. They continued south past the present sites of Wollongong and Kiama, surveyed Lake Illawarra, and reconnoitred the coast of the Shoalhaven region before turning back. The expedition produced a useful coastal sketch and confirmed several important facts about the southern coast, but more importantly it confirmed to both men that they had the skill and the temperament for serious surveying work in small open boats. The lessons of Tom Thumb would inform the partnership for the next four years.

In December 1797 George Bass set out on his most famous solo expedition, taking a whaleboat with a crew of six volunteers and sailing south from Port Jackson down the coast of New South Wales and the future colony of Victoria. He reached as far west as Western Port, surveyed a substantial stretch of the present Bass Strait coast, and on his return brought back evidence, strong westerly swells and consistent tidal flows, that there was an open strait between the southern coast and Van Diemen's Land. The hypothesis that Van Diemen's Land might be an island rather than a peninsula of the mainland had been raised by various navigators going back to the seventeenth century, but Bass was the first to provide strong empirical evidence based on direct observation. His whaleboat voyage of 1797 to 1798 remains one of the most impressive feats of small-boat exploration in the entire history of Australian discovery, and it set the stage for the joint Flinders and Bass expedition of the following summer.

Circumnavigation of Van Diemens Land

In October 1798 Governor Hunter authorized Flinders and Bass to take the colonial sloop Norfolk on a voyage of formal investigation through the suspected strait. The Norfolk was a single masted vessel of about twenty-five tons that had been built at Norfolk Island from local pine, and she was the largest vessel available for exploratory work in the colony at that time. The two friends sailed from Port Jackson on 7 October 1798 with a small crew, expecting to be away for about three months. They proceeded south along the coast of New South Wales to the Furneaux Islands at the eastern entrance of the strait, then turned west and made the first systematic survey of the strait and its islands.

The voyage of the Norfolk through what we now call Bass Strait was a triumph of practical exploration. Flinders and Bass surveyed the strait from east to west, then continued south along the western coast of Van Diemen's Land, rounded the southwestern tip at South West Cape, and made the long passage along the previously unsurveyed southern shore. They explored and named the great anchorage at the Derwent estuary, where the city of Hobart would later be founded, and continued north along the eastern coast back to the strait. By the time they returned to Port Jackson on 12 January 1799 they had completed the first circumnavigation of Van Diemen's Land and had proved conclusively that it was an island separated from the Australian mainland by what Governor Hunter, on Bass's recommendation, named Bass Strait in honour of his friend.

The Norfolk voyage established the reputation of both men as the leading practical explorers in the colony. It also tied Matthew Flinders permanently to the cartography of the southern continent. He returned to Sydney with a sheaf of careful charts, running surveys, and astronomical observations that constituted the most detailed mapping of Van Diemen's Land yet produced. Governor Hunter sent the charts to the Admiralty in London with a strong recommendation that Flinders be promoted and that further expeditions be organized under his command. The recommendation reached England at a fortunate moment. The British scientific establishment, including Sir Joseph Banks, the President of the Royal Society and the most influential patron of exploration in the country, was beginning to think seriously about a major surveying expedition to complete the cartography of the southern continent. Flinders, by his work with Bass in 1798 and 1799, had just placed himself at the head of the short list of qualified candidates.

Return to England and the Investigator Appointment

In July 1799 Flinders made one final small-boat expedition north from Port Jackson, taking the Norfolk up the eastern coast as far as Hervey Bay and the Glasshouse Mountains in what is now Queensland. He charted the Moreton Bay region in some detail and continued the running survey of the eastern coast that had been begun by Cook in 1770. By the end of 1799 he had compiled enough material for a substantial report on Australian geography, and his name was now well known both in the colony and at the Admiralty in London. In March 1800 the Reliance, having completed her five years of service in New South Wales, sailed for home. Flinders sailed with her, carrying his journals, charts, and the makings of a major scientific career.

The voyage home brought the Reliance into England in late summer 1800. Flinders went immediately to London to deliver his charts and journals to the Admiralty and to make himself known to Sir Joseph Banks at his residence in Soho Square. Banks was already aware of Flinders by reputation and was delighted to receive him in person. The interview that took place in the Soho Square library was one of the formative moments in Flinders's career. Banks, then approaching sixty, had himself sailed with Cook on the first Endeavour voyage from 1768 to 1771 and had been instrumental in shaping every major British scientific expedition of the previous thirty years. He saw in the twenty-six-year-old Flinders a young officer of exactly the kind he wanted to send to complete the cartography of the southern continent. Within a few weeks Banks had begun the political and bureaucratic work of organizing the expedition that would become the voyage of HMS Investigator.

The project moved forward through the autumn of 1800 and the winter of 1801 with the full support of Banks, of the President of the Royal Society and of the Admiralty. A ship was selected, the merchant collier Xenophon, which the Navy renamed Investigator, and Flinders was promoted to commander and given the appointment as her captain. He was twenty-six years old. The expedition was to combine the most rigorous scientific surveying then practised in Europe with a complete circumnavigation of the southern continent. A team of naturalists, astronomers, artists, and gardeners was assembled to accompany the voyage, including the botanist Robert Brown, the botanical artist Ferdinand Bauer, the landscape artist William Westall, the astronomer John Crosley, and the natural history collector Peter Good. Flinders also took as his clerk John Franklin, his cousin and the future Arctic explorer who would lose his life in 1847 searching for the Northwest Passage in the Canadian Arctic.

Marriage to Ann Chappelle

In the months between his return to England and his departure on the Investigator expedition, Matthew Flinders renewed an acquaintance that would shape the rest of his life. Ann Chappelle was a young woman from Lincolnshire whom Flinders had known casually for some years. She was intelligent, well read, and possessed of the same combination of self-discipline and emotional depth that characterized Flinders himself. During the spring of 1801 their friendship deepened rapidly into love. On 17 April 1801 they were married at Partney in Lincolnshire, in a small ceremony attended only by close family.

The marriage was a happy one but was almost immediately tested by the demands of the Investigator expedition. Flinders had originally hoped to take Ann with him to New South Wales, and Sir Joseph Banks had given his cautious blessing to the idea provided the wife of the captain travelled out as an ordinary passenger. But the Admiralty's senior officials, on hearing of the arrangement, refused to countenance it. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Earl Saint Vincent, ruled that under no circumstances could the captain's wife sail aboard a naval vessel during the period of the great Wars of the French Revolution and Napoleon. Flinders was forced to send Ann ashore the night before Investigator sailed. The parting was the great emotional crisis of both their lives. They expected to be reunited within three or four years at the most. In the event they would not see each other again for more than nine years.

The Investigator Voyage Begins

HMS Investigator sailed from Spithead on 18 July 1801 and made the long passage south by way of Madeira and the Cape of Good Hope. Flinders had received from the Admiralty a detailed set of instructions that laid out the order of the surveying work. He was to make first for the unsurveyed southern coast of the continent, beginning at Cape Leeuwin on the south-west and working east along the entire shoreline as far as the Bass Strait that he and George Bass had charted three years earlier. From the strait he was to continue north along the eastern coast as far as Cape York, then through Torres Strait into the Gulf of Carpentaria, around the north coast of the continent, and south along the western coast back to Cape Leeuwin. The instructions amounted to the first complete circumnavigation of the continent, combined with a meticulous coastal survey throughout. Banks had also obtained from the French government a special passport guaranteeing the Investigator safe passage from the French navy, since France and Britain were then at war and a French expedition under Nicolas Baudin was simultaneously making its own survey of the southern coast.

The Investigator made Cape Leeuwin on the south-western tip of the continent on 6 December 1801, and from there Flinders began the great work of his life. He bore east along the coast under a steady press of sail, fixing positions by repeated astronomical observation, sketching coastlines, sounding depths, naming bays and headlands and offshore islands. The early weeks of the survey took the ship along the previously unmapped southern shores of what would become the colony of Western Australia. King George Sound on the south-western coast was charted in detail in December 1801 and January 1802, and from there the Investigator continued east into the entirely unknown coastline of the Great Australian Bight. The voyage along the Bight was a long and lonely traverse of one of the most featureless and inhospitable shores in the world, with the cliffs of the Nullarbor rising sheer from the sea for hundreds of miles and almost no harbours or shelters available to a sailing vessel in distress.

Charting the Southern Coast

The further east the Investigator sailed, the more discoveries Flinders made. In February 1802 he entered the great gulf that he named in honour of George John Spencer, Earl Spencer, the former First Lord of the Admiralty, and explored its long, deep penetration of the southern coastline. North of the gulf he charted a great peninsula that he named Yorke Peninsula in honour of the Honourable Charles Yorke. To the east of that peninsula he discovered and surveyed a second great gulf, which he named the Gulf of Saint Vincent in honour of the First Lord of the Admiralty who had ordered the expedition. The river that empties into the head of the Gulf of Saint Vincent would later be named the Torrens after a colonial official, and on its banks the city of Adelaide would be founded thirty-four years later. The two gulfs and the peninsula between them are still designated on modern Australian maps with the names that Flinders gave them in February 1802.

East of the gulfs Flinders discovered and named Kangaroo Island, the third largest island off the Australian coast, where the men of the Investigator hunted the unusually tame kangaroos for fresh meat. From Kangaroo Island Flinders sailed east into the waters now known as Encounter Bay, where on 8 April 1802 he met the French expedition under Nicolas Baudin coming the other way. The encounter between Le Geographe under Baudin and HMS Investigator under Flinders was one of the most remarkable diplomatic moments in the history of exploration. The two nations were at war but the two captains had been granted reciprocal scientific passports, and they met in a previously unmapped part of the world to compare notes on what each of them had charted. The two captains spent two days at sea exchanging information, and Flinders later named the place Encounter Bay in commemoration. The boundary between the work of the two expeditions was thereby established and the meeting gave the southern coast a permanent place in the history of European-Australian relations.

Meeting with Nicolas Baudin at Encounter Bay

The meeting with Baudin at Encounter Bay deserves a closer look because it illustrates many of the qualities that made Flinders an exceptional figure in the history of exploration. Nicolas Baudin was a French naval officer of considerable experience who had been sent out by the First Consul Napoleon Bonaparte to carry out a scientific survey of the southern continent that paralleled Flinders's mission. Baudin's expedition consisted of two ships, Le Geographe and Le Naturaliste, and a substantial team of naturalists. The French expedition had been at sea since October 1800, eight months longer than the Investigator, and had suffered heavily from disease and from poor relations between Baudin and his scientific staff. By the time Baudin met Flinders at Encounter Bay the French expedition was demoralized and falling apart, while the Investigator was at the height of her powers.

Flinders, despite the state of war between his country and Baudin's, conducted himself with exemplary courtesy and openness. He showed Baudin his charts of the south-western and southern coasts as far as the point of meeting, gave him the latitudes and longitudes of his fixes, and discussed with him the technical questions of the survey. Baudin reciprocated in kind, although his charts were less complete and his observations less rigorous than Flinders's. The two captains parted on terms of mutual professional respect, and the boundary of their respective surveys was thereafter accepted by both expeditions and by the cartographers of both nations. Flinders's subsequent treatment by the French authorities on Mauritius makes the courtesy he extended to Baudin at Encounter Bay all the more poignant, since Baudin himself, had he survived his own voyage, would almost certainly have intervened on Flinders's behalf and might have prevented the years of imprisonment that destroyed Flinders's health.

Arrival at Port Jackson and Preparations for the Northern Voyage

From Encounter Bay the Investigator continued east into Bass Strait, surveyed the shoreline of what is now the state of Victoria, and arrived at Port Jackson on 9 May 1802 after a passage of nearly eleven months from England. The arrival in Sydney was a triumph. Flinders was now twenty-eight years old and was widely recognized in the colony as the man who had completed the southern survey and confirmed the geography of the continent. He used the months in Sydney to rest his crew, refit the Investigator, and reorganize the scientific work for the next phase of the voyage. He took on additional supplies, made repairs to the ship's rigging and copper, and added to his crew several of the most experienced sailors of the colonial service. He also made provision for the carriage of Aboriginal Australian passengers, particularly Bungaree, who would accompany the Investigator on the northward voyage and serve as an ambassador to the indigenous peoples whom the expedition would meet on the eastern, northern, and north-western shores.

The Northward Voyage and the Eastern Coast

On 22 July 1802 the Investigator sailed out of Port Jackson on the second great phase of her circumnavigation. Flinders steered north along the New South Wales coast, calling at the recently surveyed anchorage at Hervey Bay and continuing along the still-unmapped shores of what is now southern Queensland. The coast east of Hervey Bay had been described in broad strokes by Cook in 1770, but a great deal of detail remained to be filled in. Flinders worked his way north along this coast with the same methodical thoroughness he had brought to the southern survey, anchoring frequently to take astronomical sights, sending boats away to survey inlets and offshore islands, and recording in his journal the kind of precise topographical observation that would later allow British seamen to follow him with confidence into waters that had previously been a hazard to navigation.

The Investigator continued north into the dangerous reef-strewn waters of the Great Barrier Reef in the latter part of August 1802. The reef country was a navigator's nightmare, with thousands of coral patches scattered across the sea bed, many of them awash at low water and difficult to see in any weather. Flinders adopted a cautious approach. He kept the Investigator well outside the main barrier, sailing in the relatively deep water of the Coral Sea, and used the ship's boats for detailed reconnaissance whenever he needed to come close to the dangerous water. The work was slow and physically exhausting, but it produced the first reliable chart of the outer barrier from the Capricorn Group to Cape York and made future navigation through these waters substantially safer.

In late October 1802 Flinders rounded Cape York at the northern tip of the eastern coast and steered west into the Torres Strait, the dangerous archipelago of reefs and islands that separates Cape York from the southern coast of New Guinea. The Torres Strait was already known to navigators in outline. The Spaniard Luis Vaz de Torres had first passed through it in 1606, and Captain Cook had used a northern variant of the passage in 1770. The Investigator made the passage by an entirely new route, which Flinders called the Pandora Passage and which proved to be both shorter and safer than the alternatives. The Pandora Passage remained the standard route through Torres Strait for most of the nineteenth century, and the survey work that produced it was one of Flinders's most important practical contributions to the cartography of the region.

Into the Gulf of Carpentaria

From the western exit of the Torres Strait the Investigator turned south into the Gulf of Carpentaria, the great enclosed sea that forms the deep indentation between Cape York and Arnhem Land in northern Australia. The Gulf had been visited by Dutch navigators going back to the early seventeenth century. Willem Janszoon in the Duyfken had touched the eastern shore in 1606, and successive Dutch East India Company voyages, particularly those of Abel Tasman in 1644, had charted broad sections of the southern and western shores. But the Dutch surveys were old, internally inconsistent, and based on the navigational methods of the seventeenth century. Flinders set out to produce the first modern survey of the Gulf, working southwest along the eastern shore, around the deeply indented southern coast, and north along the western shore as far as Cape Arnhem.

The work in the Gulf occupied Flinders and the Investigator from November 1802 to March 1803. It was a meticulous, exhausting, and at times hazardous exercise. The shores of the Gulf were generally low, flat, mangrove-fringed, and devoid of harbours. The crew suffered increasingly from heat exhaustion, scurvy, and dysentery, and the ship itself began to show signs of serious decay. Inspection of the Investigator's hull at Cape Arnhem in late February 1803 revealed that the timbers were thoroughly rotten in many places, with the planking weak enough in some spots to be pierced with a pocket knife. Flinders consulted his officers and the ship's carpenter and concluded that the Investigator was no longer seaworthy enough to continue the careful coasting work that the survey required. He decided to abandon the close survey of the northern and western coasts and to make instead for Timor in the Dutch East Indies and then back to Port Jackson by way of the broader and safer western coast.

The Deterioration of the Investigator

The decision to abandon the close survey of the north-western and western coasts was a bitter one for Flinders, but it was forced upon him by the condition of his ship. The Investigator had been a poor choice for a long surveying voyage. She had been built as a North Sea collier with relatively light scantlings and had not received the kind of thorough strengthening that ships intended for tropical waters and remote anchorages normally received. The Admiralty surveyors had not been thorough in their inspection before the voyage, and the long passages and frequent groundings on uncharted reefs had hastened the deterioration of timbers that were already substandard. By the time the Investigator left the Gulf of Carpentaria she was, in her captain's professional judgment, no longer safe for the kind of work she had been built to do.

From Cape Arnhem the Investigator made the passage to Kupang on the western end of the island of Timor, where the ship took on water and fresh provisions and the crew rested for a few weeks. The Dutch authorities at Kupang received Flinders cordially. Although the Netherlands was nominally allied with France in the wars of the period, the Dutch East Indian outposts maintained a tradition of hospitality to passing navigators that transcended the political alignments of Europe. From Timor Flinders steered south and west into the Indian Ocean, intending to make the long passage along the western coast back to the Bass Strait without attempting any detailed survey work along the way. The voyage from Timor to Port Jackson took three months and saw the further deterioration of the ship and the crew. By the time the Investigator anchored once more in Sydney Cove on 9 June 1803 she had completed the first circumnavigation of the Australian continent under British command, but she was a barely floating wreck, and many of her crew were sick or dying.

Return to Sydney and the Fate of the Investigator

The Investigator's return to Port Jackson was a hollow triumph. The circumnavigation had been completed, and the running survey of the entire coast was substantially advanced, but the ship was unfit for further service. Governor Philip Gidley King, who had succeeded John Hunter in 1800, agreed with Flinders's assessment of the ship. Inspections in Sydney found that the Investigator could not be repaired into a condition suitable for the return voyage to England. She was eventually paid off as unfit and was hulked as a storeship in the colony, ending her career as a floating warehouse moored in Sydney Cove. The end of the Investigator as a fighting ship was a personal blow to Flinders, who had developed a deep affection for the awkward but reliable little collier in the course of two years of difficult voyaging.

The question now was how to get Flinders, his charts, and his journals back to England. The Admiralty's instructions had assumed that the Investigator would simply sail home at the end of her surveying mission. With the ship now unserviceable, alternative arrangements had to be made. Governor King agreed to send Flinders back to England as a passenger on HMS Porpoise, a small armed storeship that was making the voyage home around the Cape of Good Hope. The Porpoise would sail in company with two East India Company vessels, the Cato and the Bridgewater, which were also returning to England via the same route. Flinders accepted the arrangement and prepared himself to depart Sydney for the last time as captain.

Departure from Sydney on Hms Porpoise

HMS Porpoise sailed from Sydney Cove on 10 August 1803 in company with the Cato and the Bridgewater. Flinders was a passenger, although the senior naval officer on board, and he took with him the entire scientific archive of the Investigator voyage, including the original charts, the natural history collections, and the personal journals of the expedition's officers and scientists. The plan was to sail north through the outer Coral Sea, round Cape York into the Torres Strait, and from there proceed by way of the Indian Ocean and the Cape of Good Hope to England. The Porpoise was a smaller ship than the Investigator and was not designed for the kind of survey work that her former captain had been doing, but she was sound, sailed well, and was expected to make a quick passage home.

The expectation was bitterly disappointed. On the night of 17 August 1803, only seven days out from Sydney, the Porpoise and the Cato ran together onto an uncharted coral reef in the Coral Sea, about seven hundred and fifty nautical miles north-east of Port Jackson. The Bridgewater, sailing slightly to leeward, saw the wreck happen but inexplicably failed to come to the assistance of her companions. Her captain stood on under reduced sail and disappeared to the north-east, leaving the survivors of the two wrecked ships to fend for themselves. Bridgewater was herself lost at sea some months later, with all hands, on the passage between the East Indies and India, and her abandonment of the Porpoise and Cato has remained a stain on the memory of her captain in the annals of British seamanship.

The Wreck on Wreck Reef

The reef on which the Porpoise and the Cato struck was unmarked on any chart. It was later named Wreck Reef in commemoration of the disaster. The survivors, numbering more than ninety men in total, managed to scramble onto a small sand cay at the edge of the reef, taking with them as much of the ships' provisions as they could salvage. They lost two men in the wreck of the Cato but otherwise the loss of life was small. Flinders took charge of the survivors with the same methodical competence he had shown in every other crisis of his career. He organized the building of shelters, the rationing of provisions, the construction of a flag mast, and the planning of the relief expedition that would have to be sent to bring the men back to Port Jackson.

The plan that Flinders developed in the days following the wreck was characteristic of his temperament. He proposed to take the largest of the ships' boats, a six-oared cutter that had been saved from the Porpoise, and to sail her back to Sydney with a small picked crew to organize relief for the rest of the survivors. The boat was small, the distance was seven hundred and fifty nautical miles across an open sea exposed to the south-east trade winds, and the chances of a successful voyage were modest. Nevertheless Flinders set out on 26 August 1803 with a crew of thirteen volunteers, including his old friend the master of the Porpoise. The voyage took thirteen days. The little cutter made Port Jackson on 8 September 1803, and Flinders went immediately to Government House to inform Governor King of the disaster and to organize the relief.

The Relief of Wreck Reef

The relief expedition that Governor King organized at Flinders's urging was a remarkable demonstration of colonial competence. King chartered three vessels then available in Sydney, the Rolla, the Cumberland, and the Francis, and dispatched them to Wreck Reef with provisions, water, and a navigator who could find the position again. Flinders himself sailed in the Cumberland, a tiny schooner of only twenty-nine tons that he had been given temporary command of for the relief voyage. The Cumberland, the Rolla, and the Francis reached Wreck Reef in October 1803 and successfully evacuated all of the surviving men of the Porpoise and Cato. The rescue was completed without further loss of life, and the survivors were transferred either to Sydney or, in the case of those who could continue the voyage to England, to the Rolla, which was bound for Canton on her way home.

The question now was what to do with Matthew Flinders. The Rolla was the obvious choice as the vessel to take him back to England. But Flinders, who had a notoriously stubborn streak in matters of professional honour, refused to wait for the Rolla's slow passage by way of Canton. He proposed instead to take the tiny Cumberland directly to England by way of the Cape of Good Hope, calling at Kupang and at the Cape for water and provisions. The Cumberland was a wholly unsuitable vessel for such a voyage. She was old, leaky, and far too small for the long passages required. Flinders's officers and the ship's company tried to dissuade him from the attempt, but he was determined to bring the charts and journals of the Investigator voyage home as quickly as possible, and he believed, wrongly as it turned out, that the Cumberland was capable of making the passage. Governor King, perhaps reluctantly, gave his consent, and the little schooner sailed from Wreck Reef in October 1803.

The Cumberland Voyage

The voyage of the Cumberland was a story of accumulating misfortune. The schooner leaked badly from the moment she sailed, requiring almost continuous pumping. Her sails and rigging were inadequate, her stores were limited, and the ten men of her crew were exhausted from the work of pumping her dry. Flinders made the long passage through Torres Strait with characteristic skill, taking advantage of his earlier survey to find the safest route through the reefs, and then steered west across the Arafura Sea and into the Indian Ocean. By December 1803 the Cumberland had reached the open Indian Ocean, where she was forced south by adverse winds. The original plan had been to call at the Cape of Good Hope for water and repairs, but it became clear that the schooner could not safely make the long run across the Indian Ocean without an intermediate stop. Flinders decided to put in at the French island of Mauritius, then known by its French name of Île de France, on the assumption that the scientific passport he carried would secure him a courteous reception there.

The decision to call at Mauritius was the great strategic mistake of Flinders's career. He could not have known that the Treaty of Amiens, which had briefly suspended the war between Britain and France in 1802, had broken down some months earlier and that a new and more bitter phase of the conflict had begun. He also did not know that the French Governor of Mauritius, General Charles-Mathieu-Isidore Decaen, was a difficult and suspicious man with no scientific sympathies and a strong tendency to interpret every British presence in the Indian Ocean as a threat. The Cumberland anchored in Port Louis on 17 December 1803. Flinders went ashore to present his credentials. He carried his Admiralty commission, his scientific passport, his charts, and his journals. He expected to be granted water, provisions, and a swift departure. Instead he was arrested.

Arrival at Mauritius and Arrest

The reception that Flinders received from Decaen on 17 December 1803 has been the subject of two centuries of historical analysis and continues to puzzle scholars. There was no precedent in international law or in the customs of war for the detention of a British naval officer carrying a scientific passport issued by the French government in time of peace. Flinders had a clear right to safe passage. He had used Decaen's predecessor at Mauritius as a port of call on entirely correct terms during his voyage out, and he had every reason to expect the same treatment in 1803. But Decaen was suspicious of the Cumberland, of her small size, and of the fact that she was not the Investigator named in the original passport. He was further suspicious of Flinders's manner, which was direct and stiff in the British naval style and may have struck the French general as arrogant. He suspected Flinders of spying. He arrested him, confiscated his papers, charts, and journals, and ordered him to remain on Mauritius pending instructions from Paris.

The instructions from Paris, when they finally came many months later, did nothing to clarify the situation. Napoleon Bonaparte, on hearing of the case, ruled that Flinders should be released and allowed to proceed to Europe. But the order was vague enough to allow Decaen to delay its implementation, and the general, who had developed by this time a personal animus against Flinders, found one excuse after another to keep him on the island. Months stretched into years. Flinders was moved from his initial confinement at the Café Marengo in Port Louis to more lenient parole on a plantation called Maison Despeaux at Vacoas in the interior of Mauritius, where he was allowed considerable freedom of movement on the estate but was forbidden to leave the island. He spent more than six years in captivity, from December 1803 until June 1810, during which time he wrote the bulk of A Voyage to Terra Australis and conducted the most thorough scientific revision of his Australian charts.

Life as a Prisoner of General Decaen

Flinders's life on Mauritius during the years of his captivity has been documented in the most extraordinary detail by his own private journals, which he kept with characteristic meticulousness throughout the entire imprisonment. The journals reveal a man whose patience, intellectual discipline, and emotional resilience were the equal of any of his other qualities. He was thirty when he was arrested. He had been married for two and a half years, and he had been parted from his wife for almost the same length of time. His professional reputation was at the height of its first flowering, his charts and journals were in the hands of his captors, and his future career was in indefinite suspension. A weaker man might have collapsed under the strain. Flinders set himself to work, and his work over the next six years would constitute the most important intellectual labour of his life.

The work fell into three main parts. First, Flinders devoted himself to the preparation of his great book on the Investigator voyage. He wrote a complete draft of A Voyage to Terra Australis from memory and from such notes as Decaen had eventually permitted him to retain, then revised it through several careful passes as additional materials and references became available through correspondence with friends in England. Second, he undertook a thorough study of the variation of the magnetic compass at sea, a topic of considerable practical importance to the navigators of his day. The Investigator had been an iron-fastened ship, and Flinders had noticed during the voyage that the local magnetic field of the ship affected the readings of the compass in ways that varied with the heading. He worked out the mathematical theory of what is now called Flinders's deviation and proposed a practical solution involving a soft iron bar mounted vertically near the compass to compensate for the ship's magnetic effect.

The Flinders Bar, as the device came to be known, was adopted by the Royal Navy in the years after his death and remained in standard use throughout the age of iron-hulled steamships. It is one of the few elements of nineteenth-century practical navigation that is still discussed in modern textbooks of magnetic compass adjustment, and it constitutes one of Flinders's most enduring contributions to the science of his profession. The development of the Flinders Bar during the years of captivity is the kind of thing that distinguishes the truly creative scientific mind from the merely competent professional. Confined to a French plantation on a remote tropical island, with no access to laboratory facilities or to the broader scientific community, Flinders identified a fundamental problem in marine compass design, worked out its theoretical basis, and proposed a practical solution that would be in use for more than a century after his death.

The third major occupation of the Mauritius years was the maintenance of his correspondence and the management of his relationships with both Decaen and the wider French scientific community. Flinders wrote regularly to his wife Ann, to his brother Samuel, to Sir Joseph Banks in London, and to a circle of French naturalists and astronomers who had taken his side in the dispute with Decaen. The most important of these correspondents was Bougainville, the great French navigator of the eighteenth century, and Cuvier, the leading French zoologist of the early nineteenth century, both of whom petitioned the French government on Flinders's behalf. Their interventions, combined with the persistent advocacy of Joseph Banks in London, eventually wore down the resistance of the French authorities. In March 1810 Decaen at last received unambiguous orders from Paris to release the prisoner. The orders were not implemented until June, by which time the British naval blockade of Mauritius had become tight enough to make the departure of a single small vessel a matter of considerable difficulty. Flinders left the island in mid-June 1810 aboard the cartel ship Harriet, which had been arranged for the purpose by the Royal Navy squadron blockading Port Louis.

Release and Return to England

The release from Mauritius came too late to undo the damage that the years of captivity had inflicted on Flinders's health and on his professional prospects. He had been a young man of thirty when Decaen arrested him. He was a worn and aging man of thirty-six when he sailed for England in 1810. His health, never robust, had been undermined by repeated bouts of fever and gravel and by the cumulative effect of years of confinement in a tropical climate. His marriage had been suspended at the threshold of its first year and would have to be reconstructed in middle age. His career as an active naval officer was over. The Admiralty, which had not promoted him during his captivity, did not promote him with any urgency after his release. He returned to England in October 1810 to find that the world of British exploration had moved on without him, that the cartographic work he had done in Australia had been overtaken in some respects by the publications of the surviving members of the Baudin expedition, and that the great Napoleonic War which had broken his career still had four bitter years to run.

Flinders landed at Spithead in October 1810 and made his way to London, where he was reunited with his wife Ann after a separation of more than nine years. The reunion was tender but tinged with the sadness that the long parting had imposed on both of them. Ann had aged with grace, but the energetic young woman of 1801 had passed forever, and the broken and exhausted captain who returned to her in 1810 was no longer the young husband who had sailed from Spithead with such confidence in their future. They settled in a modest house in Mary Street in central London, near the lodgings that the Admiralty maintained for senior officers on shore service, and Flinders threw himself into the work that would occupy the four remaining years of his life: the completion of A Voyage to Terra Australis and the supervision of the atlas of charts that would accompany it.

A Voyage to Terra Australis

The book that Flinders had drafted and redrafted during the years on Mauritius was the product of an extraordinary intellectual effort. A Voyage to Terra Australis: undertaken for the purpose of completing the discovery of that vast country, and prosecuted in the years 1801, 1802, and 1803, in His Majesty's ship the Investigator was published in two large quarto volumes accompanied by a folio atlas of charts. The book ran to more than fifteen hundred pages and constituted at once a narrative of the voyage, a scientific report on its findings, a discussion of the history of European exploration of the southern continent, and an extended argument for the use of the name Australia as the proper designation for the continent. It is one of the great works of British exploration literature, and it remains the indispensable primary source for everything that is known about Flinders's voyage of 1801 to 1803.

The four years from 1810 to 1814 that Flinders spent on the completion of A Voyage to Terra Australis were among the most productive of his life. He worked, despite increasing illness, with the kind of single-minded determination that had marked all of his earlier endeavours. He coordinated with the engravers, the chart-makers, the printers, and the binders who would produce the final volume. He drafted, revised, and re-revised the text. He carried on extensive correspondence with the surviving members of his expedition, particularly the botanist Robert Brown and the artist Ferdinand Bauer, to ensure that the scientific portions of the book were as accurate as he could make them. And he fought a long, polite, and largely successful battle with the Admiralty over the use of the name Australia in place of the older designations Terra Australis and New Holland.

The Naming of Australia

The question of what to call the great southern continent had vexed European geographers for more than two centuries. The Dutch had called the western and northern coasts New Holland, after the sailors of the Dutch East India Company who had first charted them in the early seventeenth century. The English, after Cook's voyage of 1770, had called the eastern coast New South Wales. The notional fifth continent had also been known by the various Latin formulations Terra Australis Incognita, Terra Australis, and the Great South Land. Flinders, in his Mauritius journals and in his book, argued that none of these names was adequate for what he had now demonstrated to be a single unified landmass. He proposed instead the simple geographical noun Australia, derived from the Latin australis meaning southern, and used the name in a footnote of the book that has since become one of the most celebrated passages in Australian historical literature. He acknowledged that the term had been used in passing by earlier writers, including the seventeenth-century English navigator William Dampier and the eighteenth-century Welsh hydrographer Alexander Dalrymple, but he was the first to propose it as the formal designation for the entire continent.

The Admiralty initially resisted the change. The formal designation Terra Australis appeared on the title page of the book despite Flinders's preference, and the use of Australia in the body of the text was permitted only as a footnote alternative. But the proposed name caught on with extraordinary speed. The botanist Robert Brown used it in his scientific publications. Governor Lachlan Macquarie of New South Wales, who served from 1810 to 1821, adopted it in his official correspondence with London from 1817 onward. By the 1820s the name Australia was in general use among English-speaking writers, and by the time the British colonies of the southern continent began moving toward federation in the late nineteenth century the name was the unchallenged designation of the country. The Commonwealth of Australia, formally constituted on 1 January 1901, took its name directly from the proposal that Matthew Flinders had quietly entered in a footnote nearly a century earlier. It is one of the more remarkable cases in the history of geographical nomenclature of a private suggestion by a single navigator becoming the official designation of a sovereign nation.

Death and Final Days

Matthew Flinders's health deteriorated steadily through the years of his work on the book. The kidney and bladder complaints that had troubled him on Mauritius worsened in the damp London climate, and by the spring of 1814 he was confined to bed for long periods. He continued to work on the book and the atlas almost to the last day. The two volumes of A Voyage to Terra Australis came off the press in mid-July 1814, with copies of the printed work delivered to the author's bedside in Mary Street. He was too ill to recognize them. By his side were his wife Ann, his small daughter Anne, and a small group of friends and naval colleagues. He died at his home in central London on 19 July 1814, the day after the formal publication of his book. He was forty years old.

The cause of death is generally given as renal disease, exacerbated by years of poor food, poor water, and the cumulative effects of his various illnesses. The conditions under which he had served in the Royal Navy of the late eighteenth century, the months of work in the tropical heat of the Gulf of Carpentaria, the open boat voyage from Wreck Reef to Port Jackson, and the six and a half years of captivity on Mauritius had all contributed to the breaking of his constitution. He left behind a young wife of thirty-three and a daughter of three years old. He left behind unpaid bills, unfinished business, and a large body of professional work whose full importance would not be recognized for decades.

The funeral was a modest affair, attended only by family and a few close friends. Flinders was buried in the burial ground of St James's Church, Piccadilly, which was at that time located in the parish of Hampstead Road in north London, near what is now Euston station. The burial ground was overcrowded even in 1814, and over the following century it was further built over by the expansion of London's railway infrastructure. The exact location of Flinders's grave was lost during the construction of the original Euston station in the 1840s, and for the next one hundred and seventy-five years his final resting place was unknown.

Ann Chappelle Flinders and the Family Legacy

Ann Chappelle Flinders survived her husband by forty-eight years. She lived until 1852, dying in London at the age of seventy-one. She devoted much of her widowhood to securing for her husband the recognition that the British government had failed to grant him during his lifetime. She petitioned the Admiralty for the pension that should have been her due as the widow of a senior naval officer who had died on active service. She corresponded with Sir Joseph Banks and with the surviving members of the Investigator expedition. She maintained the family's connection with Lincolnshire and with the Royal Geographical Society, which kept the memory of her husband alive in the British scientific community during the difficult decades of the early nineteenth century. The pension she finally received was modest, but it allowed her to remain in London and to see her daughter through to adulthood.

The Flinders's only child, Anne Flinders, was born in April 1812 during the last years of her father's life. She inherited many of his intellectual qualities and married in 1839 the Reverend William Petrie, an antiquarian and Egyptologist. Their son, born in 1853, was William Matthew Flinders Petrie, who became one of the great pioneer Egyptologists of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and the first holder of the Edwards Chair of Egyptology at University College London. Through Flinders Petrie the explorer's bloodline was carried into the scholarly world of British archaeology, and Flinders Petrie's daughter Hilda would in turn make her own contribution to the study of ancient civilizations. The transmission of intellectual energy across these three generations is one of the more remarkable family stories in the history of British learning.

The Lost Grave and Its Rediscovery

The lost grave of Matthew Flinders was rediscovered in January 2019 during the archaeological clearance of the burial ground of St James's Church for the construction of the High Speed Two railway terminus at Euston in central London. The grounds of the old burial ground had been built over progressively from the 1840s onward, and during that long process the graves of more than forty thousand people had been disturbed, with most of the remains anonymously reinterred in mass graves and the original burial markers destroyed. The clearance of the site for the new railway terminus involved the most careful archaeological work ever undertaken on a burial ground of this kind in Britain. Each individual grave was excavated, recorded, and the remains transferred under controlled conditions for analysis and reburial.

Among the forty thousand sets of remains that the archaeologists exhumed was one accompanied by a lead breastplate inscribed with the name Captain Matthew Flinders, RN, his date of death, and his age at the time of death. The breastplate had been crafted at the time of the burial in 1814 and had survived two centuries of disturbance still attached to the coffin in which Flinders had been laid to rest. The discovery was announced in late January 2019 and was greeted with extraordinary interest both in Britain and in Australia. The remains were authenticated, conserved, and held at the High Speed Two site office for several years while plans were made for the eventual reinterment of the great explorer.

In July 2024 Matthew Flinders was finally laid to rest in the parish church of St Mary and the Holy Rood in Donington, Lincolnshire, the church in which he had been baptized two hundred and fifty years earlier. The reburial was attended by a representative of the Australian High Commission, by descendants of the Flinders family, by members of the Royal Navy, and by a large congregation of local people who had followed the rediscovery of the lost explorer with intense local pride. The names Spencer Gulf, Gulf of Saint Vincent, Yorke Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, Investigator Strait, Backstairs Passage, Encounter Bay, Cape Catastrophe, and dozens of other features along the southern shore are all entries from Flinders's logbook. Trim the Cat

Among the more endearing features of Matthew Flinders's biography is the figure of his cat, Trim. Trim was born aboard HMS Reliance in 1799 and travelled with Flinders for the next four years, accompanying him on the Investigator voyage and through the wreck of the Porpoise. He was, by his master's loving account, a black cat with white feet and a white star on his chest, of unusual size and intelligence, who showed himself an able climber of the rigging and a discriminating judge of the personalities of the ship's officers. Flinders wrote a short tribute to his cat during the years on Mauritius, where Trim disappeared and was presumed to have been killed by hungry slaves on the French plantation where Flinders was confined. The tribute, which begins with the splendid line To the memory of Trim, the best and most illustrious of his Race, the most affectionate of friends, faithful of servants, and best of creatures, is one of the small classics of English nineteenth century prose and has helped to humanize the figure of Flinders for generations of readers.

A bronze statue of Trim, sculpted by John Cornwell, was unveiled at the Mitchell Library in Sydney in 1996 and stands today on a window-sill outside the State Library of New South Wales. A second copy of the statue stands beside the statue of Matthew Flinders himself outside the parish church in Donington. Australian schoolchildren still read the tribute to Trim as a part of the introduction to the story of European exploration of their continent, and the cat has become almost as well known in Australia as his master. The story of Trim is a useful reminder that the great expeditions of European exploration were not abstract scientific exercises but the lived experience of small communities of human beings and their animals, isolated for years at a time on small wooden ships in the most remote oceans of the world.

The Naturalists of the Investigator

The scientific work of the Investigator expedition was carried out by a small team of specialists who travelled with Flinders for the full duration of the voyage and who, in some cases, continued their work for many years afterward. The senior naturalist was Robert Brown, a Scottish botanist who had been recommended by Sir Joseph Banks. Brown was twenty-eight years old when he sailed on Investigator and was already a botanist of considerable reputation. During the voyage he collected more than three thousand four hundred species of Australian plants, of which more than two thousand were new to science. His subsequent publication of Prodromus Florae Novae Hollandiae et Insulae Van-Diemen in 1810 was the foundation document of Australian systematic botany and remained the standard reference work for the flora of the continent for most of the nineteenth century. Brown also made important contributions to general botany, including the discovery of the cell nucleus and the description of the random motion of small particles in liquid that has since been known as Brownian motion.

The botanical artist of the expedition was Ferdinand Bauer, an Austrian who had been recruited to provide watercolour illustrations of the plants and animals that Brown was collecting. Bauer's work on the Investigator voyage is widely regarded as the finest botanical art ever produced. He developed a unique system of numerical colour notation that allowed him to sketch plants in the field in monochrome and then complete the colouring later from his notes, a technique that made it possible to record the appearance of fresh specimens that would otherwise have wilted and lost their colours before they could be painted. The finished illustrations are masterpieces of scientific observation and artistic technique that are now held in major museum collections around the world. Bauer remained in New South Wales for two years after the Investigator's circumnavigation, working in the colonial gardens and on Norfolk Island, before returning to Europe in 1805.

The landscape artist of the expedition was William Westall, a young English painter who had been recommended to Flinders by Banks. Westall was only nineteen when the Investigator sailed and he developed considerably as an artist during the voyage. His sketches and oil paintings of the Australian coastline are the earliest large-scale visual record of the continent produced by a trained European artist and have great historical as well as aesthetic importance. The astronomer of the expedition, John Crosley, was forced by illness to leave the Investigator at the Cape of Good Hope on the outward passage and was replaced for the voyage proper by James Inman, a young Cambridge mathematician who would later go on to a distinguished career as the founder of the Royal Naval College at Portsmouth. The natural history collector Peter Good, the gardener of the expedition, died on the return voyage from disease contracted in the Gulf of Carpentaria. His widow received a small pension from the Admiralty in recognition of his services.

Bungaree was an Eora man from the Sydney region who had become a trusted intermediary between the colonial administration and the Aboriginal peoples around Port Jackson. Governor King had suggested that he accompany Flinders to assist with the diplomatic side of the encounters that the expedition would have along the eastern, northern, and north-western coasts. Bungaree played his role with consummate skill. He greeted strange peoples with a combination of courtesy, gesture, and the ceremonial protocols of his own culture, and he was often the first to step ashore when the Investigator made contact with previously unknown groups. His participation in the voyage has been the subject of considerable modern Australian scholarship and is now recognized as one of the most important indigenous contributions to the European exploration of the continent.

The Flinders Bar and Nautical Science

The development of the Flinders Bar during the years of captivity on Mauritius deserves a more extended discussion because it represents one of the most important practical contributions to nineteenth-century navigation. The magnetic compass had been the principal instrument of marine direction-finding for centuries, and by the late eighteenth century it had achieved a remarkable degree of refinement. But the compass was vulnerable to a problem that became increasingly serious as iron came into more widespread use in shipbuilding. The local magnetic field of the ship, generated by the iron in its hull, fittings, and cargo, distorted the readings of the compass in ways that varied with the heading of the ship. The phenomenon was known as compass deviation, and it had been the subject of considerable practical investigation but no satisfactory theoretical analysis throughout the eighteenth century.

Flinders had noticed the phenomenon clearly during the Investigator voyage. The Investigator was iron-fastened, and its iron content produced compass deviations that complicated the running surveys of the Australian coast. During the years on Mauritius, Flinders worked out a more systematic theoretical analysis of the problem. He distinguished the permanent magnetism of the ship's iron, which was a constant property of the ship and which deflected the compass by a fixed angle for any given heading, from the induced magnetism of the soft iron in the ship's fittings, which varied with the orientation of the ship to the earth's magnetic field. He proposed that the deviation due to the induced magnetism could be compensated by placing a soft iron bar near the compass, mounted vertically so that it would acquire an induced magnetism opposite to that of the ship and largely cancel it out.

The soft iron compensating bar, mounted in a vertical position beside the binnacle, became standard equipment on Royal Navy warships from the 1820s onward and was known throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a Flinders Bar in recognition of its inventor. The bar continued to be used long after the introduction of iron-hulled and then steel-hulled ships, because it offered the only practical way of compensating for the vertical component of the ship's induced magnetism. The Flinders Bar is still discussed in modern textbooks of magnetic compass adjustment and is still installed on the few merchant ships that retain magnetic compasses as a backup to electronic navigation systems. The development of the device while its inventor was a prisoner of the French on a remote Indian Ocean island is one of the more remarkable footnotes in the history of practical science.

Comparisons with Cook and Vancouver

The position of Matthew Flinders in the broader history of British maritime exploration can be illuminated by comparison with the two other great surveyors of his immediate generation, James Cook and George Vancouver. Cook had transformed the practice of marine surveying during his three voyages between 1768 and 1779 and had set the standards that the later generation of British navigators worked to. Vancouver had carried Cook's methods to the north-west coast of America during his great voyage of 1791 to 1795, producing a coastal survey that remained the standard chart of British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest of the United States for most of the nineteenth century. Flinders worked in the tradition that Cook had established and that Vancouver had refined, and his contribution to that tradition was the comprehensive survey of the southern continent.

There are interesting differences as well as similarities between the three navigators. Cook had been a working sailor of humble background who had risen through the merchant marine and the Royal Navy on his own talents. Vancouver had been one of Cook's own midshipmen on the second and third voyages and had been formed almost entirely by the Cook system. Flinders, in his turn, had learned from Bligh, who had been Cook's sailing master on the third voyage, and was therefore part of the second generation of the Cook school. The continuity of method and outlook across these three generations is one of the most striking features of British exploration history during the great age of marine surveying. The chart of the world that emerged from their combined work, supplemented by the contemporaneous French surveys of La Pérouse, d'Entrecasteaux, and Baudin, was the basis of European navigation throughout the nineteenth century and contained relatively few features that needed substantial correction until the introduction of satellite geodesy in the late twentieth century.

The personal qualities that the three navigators shared were also striking. Each combined exceptional practical seamanship with a strong scientific bent, an unusual humanitarian streak in his dealings with crews and with indigenous peoples, and a temperament willing to commit to years of separation from home and family in pursuit of a difficult professional goal. Each was also vulnerable in his own way. Cook was killed at Hawaii at the age of fifty in a confused encounter that historians still debate. Vancouver died at forty in obscure circumstances after a difficult return to England and personal disputes with members of his own scientific staff. Flinders died at forty after the imprisonment that had broken his health. The work was demanding even of strong men, and the long voyages of exploration during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries took a heavy toll on those who undertook them.

The Legacy of Flinders in Australia

The legacy of Matthew Flinders in Australia is more extensive and more visible than the legacy of almost any other European explorer in the country he made known to the world. The name of Flinders appears on the modern Australian map in literally hundreds of forms. There is a Flinders Ranges in South Australia, the great mountain chain that runs north from the head of Spencer Gulf and that bears the name in honour of the man who first surveyed the gulf and its hinterland. There is a Flinders Island in the Furneaux Group at the eastern entrance of Bass Strait, named after Flinders by the colonial cartographers of the early nineteenth century. There is a Flinders River in northern Queensland that drains the eastern hinterland of the Gulf of Carpentaria into the gulf that Flinders surveyed in 1802 and 1803.

There are Flinders Streets in every major Australian city. The Flinders Street Station in Melbourne is one of the most famous railway terminals in the southern hemisphere and is a landmark of the modern city. There is a Flinders University in Adelaide, founded in 1966, which has grown into one of the leading research universities in South Australia. There is a Flinders Medical Centre, a Flinders Park, and a Flinders Chase National Park on Kangaroo Island. The College of Engineering at the University of Tasmania bears Flinders's name. The Royal Australian Navy operated a survey ship named HMAS Flinders from 1973 to 1998, and a second survey vessel, HMAS Flinders Bay, continued the tradition until 2024. The Flinders Naval Depot at Westernport in Victoria has been a major Royal Australian Navy training establishment since 1920.

Beyond the toponymic legacy, Flinders has been the subject of a steady stream of biographical and historical scholarship in Australia. The earliest extended biography, Sir Ernest Scott's The Life of Captain Matthew Flinders, was published in 1914 to mark the centenary of the navigator's death. Successive generations of Australian historians have refined and expanded the picture, producing major biographies by Geoffrey Rawson in 1950 and Miriam Estensen in 2002. The standard scholarly edition of Flinders's private journals from the Investigator voyage was prepared by Kenneth Morgan and published in 2015 by the Hakluyt Society. The Mauritius journals have been edited and published in a separate series by the Australian historian Anthony Brown. The cumulative weight of this scholarship has secured Flinders's place in the Australian national pantheon as one of the foundational figures of the country's exploration history.

The Fate of George Bass

It would not be complete to discuss the legacy of Matthew Flinders without addressing the fate of his great friend and partner George Bass. After the Norfolk voyage of 1798 to 1799 Bass had remained in New South Wales for some time, working as a private trader. In 1801 he resigned from the Royal Navy and devoted himself to commercial ventures that took him repeatedly between Sydney and the South American coast. He purchased a ship, the Venus, in 1801 and used her for trading expeditions that combined legitimate commerce with attempts to break into the Spanish-controlled trade of the South American Pacific coast. In February 1803 Bass sailed from Port Jackson in the Venus with a small crew, intending to make a trading voyage to the Spanish settlements of Chile and Peru. He was never heard from again.

The fate of George Bass has been the subject of speculation for more than two centuries. The most likely explanation is that the Venus was lost at sea in the South Pacific in 1803 or 1804, either through shipwreck or through the action of the Spanish authorities who jealously guarded their American empire from foreign intrusion. Various theories have been advanced over the years that Bass and his crew were captured by the Spanish and worked to death in the silver mines of Peru, but no historical evidence has ever been found to support such a story. The most probable truth is the simpler one, that Bass and his crew perished at sea in unknown circumstances and that their disappearance is one of the great unsolved mysteries of Pacific maritime history. Matthew Flinders, learning of the disappearance during the years on Mauritius, mourned his friend deeply and dedicated the Investigator's survey of Bass Strait to his memory. The naming of the strait by Governor Hunter in 1798 had been a partial recognition of Bass's contribution. The completion of the survey by Flinders made the recognition permanent.

Memorials and Commemoration

The first major memorial to Matthew Flinders was placed in Donington church not long after his death, when a brass plaque commemorating his life was installed in the chancel. The Lincolnshire town has remained the focal point of British commemoration of Flinders ever since. The bicentenary of his birth in 1974 was marked by a substantial programme of events in Donington, including the unveiling of the bronze statue by the local sculptor that still stands in the churchyard. The two hundred and tenth anniversary of his death in 2024 saw the reinterment of his remains in the same church, with a service attended by Australian and British dignitaries.

In Australia the commemoration of Flinders has been more elaborate. The first statue of the navigator in Australia was erected in Melbourne in 1925, a bronze figure on Spring Street outside the State Library that depicts Flinders in full naval dress standing beside a globe with one hand on his chart of Australia. He has been the subject of several historical novels, including the highly regarded To Sail Beyond the Sunset trilogy by Robert Holden and the more recent Flinders by Tim Flannery. He was the subject of a major documentary film produced by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation in 2002 to coincide with the bicentenary of the Investigator voyage. The Investigator Expedition in Historical Context

The Investigator expedition of 1801 to 1803 was the culmination of a particular phase in the history of European exploration of the southern continent. The phase had begun in the early seventeenth century with the chance landings of Dutch East India Company ships on the western and northern coasts, had been extended in the 1640s by the directed voyages of Abel Tasman, had been continued by William Dampier in the 1690s, and had been transformed in 1770 by the eastern survey of Captain Cook. By the time of the Investigator voyage, the broad outline of the continent was known to European cartographers, but a great deal of detailed work remained to be done. The southern coast between Cape Leeuwin and Bass Strait was unsurveyed. The north-western coast was charted only in broad and inconsistent outline. The strait between Van Diemen's Land and the mainland had been described in general terms but had not been precisely surveyed.

Flinders's expedition closed all of these gaps and produced the first comprehensive coastal survey of the continent. The historical significance of this achievement is that it changed the way Europeans thought about Australia.
