Anthem History

Adopted in 1973; as a Commonwealth country, in addition to the national anthem, "God Save the Queen" serves as the royal anthem (see the United Kingdom)

Lift up your head to the rising sun, Bahamaland,

March on to glory, your bright banners waving high,

See how the world marks the manner of your bearing;

Pledge to excel thro' love and unity.

Pressing onward, march together, to a common loftier goal;

Steady sunward tho' the weather hide the wide and treacherous shoal.

Flag Symbolism

The flag has three equal horizontal bands of aquamarine or aqua blue(top), gold, and aquamarine or aqua blue, with a black equilateral triangle based on the hoist side. The bands stand for the sands of the 700 Bahamian islands which make up the nation and the waters that surround it. A black triangle that stands for unity comes in from the left edge of the flag. Some people feel the golden hue symbolized the sun-warmed coasts of the islands.
