Developed as a port by 18th-century Burmese ruler King Alaungpaya, it became the capital in 1755. The name may be derived from the Burmese word yangun, meaning "peaceful". The name may also be linked with Dagon, the god whose golden-spired Shwe Dagon pagoda dominates the city. |
