Capital - history | Chosen in 1909 to replace Melbourne as the capital, but construction was delayed by World War I. Canberra became the official seat of the national government in 1927. The name comes from an aboriginal word canberra meaning "meeting place." Canberra itself covers about 12 square miles of the Australian Capital Territory, which covers 939 square miles. |
