Among the natural wonders of the world, few places inspire the kind of speechless awe that Iguazu Falls produces in the human spirit. Straddling the border between Argentina and Brazil in the heart of South America, Iguazu Falls is not a single waterfall but a vast, crescent-shaped curtain of water stretching across approximately 2.7 kilometers of the Iguazu River. With 275 individual cascades tumbling from heights of up to 82 meters into a churning canyon far below, Iguazu is wider than Victoria Falls and taller than Niagara Falls. It is a place where subtropical jungle presses right to the edge of the abyss, where clouds of permanent mist nurture hanging gardens of orchids and mosses, and where the roar of falling water fills the air for kilometers in every direction. Iguazu Falls is, without exaggeration, one of the most extraordinary natural spectacles on the planet, and it has earned its place on the UNESCO World Heritage List twice over — once for the Argentine side and once for the Brazilian side.

Yet to reduce Iguazu to mere statistics is to miss the point entirely. The falls represent the intersection of geological forces, ecological abundance, human history, and living indigenous culture. They sit at the heart of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most biodiverse biomes on Earth, a region that once covered approximately 1.5 million square kilometers across South America and now survives in fragmented remnants, of which the Iguazu national parks preserve a critical and irreplaceable portion. Understanding Iguazu means understanding the river that feeds it, the plateau it carves through, the peoples who have lived beside it for thousands of years, the explorers who stumbled upon it with wonder, and the modern world's ongoing struggle to protect it.

The Geography of the Iguazu River and the Parana Plateau

The Iguazu River — known as the Iguaçu in Brazil — originates in the Serra do Mar mountain range near the city of Curitiba in the Brazilian state of Paraná. From its source at an elevation of roughly 1,200 meters, the river descends gradually across the Paraná Plateau, a vast basalt tableland formed by enormous volcanic eruptions roughly 130 million years ago during the breakup of the ancient supercontinent Gondwana. Over millions of years, rivers have cut deep into this plateau, and the Iguazu River has spent countless millennia working its way toward the dramatic geological boundary where the plateau meets a sudden escarpment.

The river flows for approximately 1,320 kilometers in total before it joins the Paraná River, but it is in its final stretch before that confluence where the drama unfolds. The Iguazu River drops off the edge of the basalt plateau in the spectacular series of cataracts that constitute the falls. The river then flows through a narrow gorge, cutting westward until it pours into the much larger Paraná River just a few kilometers downstream of the falls themselves. The exact point where the Iguazu River joins the Paraná corresponds to the triple frontier where Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay share a common geographic meeting point — a culturally significant and historically complex border zone.

The falls themselves sit entirely within the broad border region where Brazil's Paraná state meets Argentina's Misiones province. The main cascade complex lies along the border, but the falls are more fully accessible from the Argentine side because the Argentine park encompasses roughly 550 square kilometers compared to the Brazilian park's approximately 185,000 hectares. The Brazilian park, while larger, offers a different and complementary experience: from Brazil, visitors look across the gorge at the full panoramic sweep of the cataracts, while from Argentina, visitors walk through and even across the top of the falls themselves.

The geology underlying the falls is largely composed of the Paraná basalt, a dark, fine-grained volcanic rock that has been shaped by millions of years of erosion into the complex topography visible today. The basalt is not uniform, and its varying hardness has led to the differential erosion that created the many distinct gorges, islands, and isolated rock towers that give the falls their characteristic ragged, multi-tiered appearance. Water exploits every weakness in the rock, constantly working backward and deepening the gorge through hydraulic action, abrasion, and the undermining of less resistant rock layers.
