When the Spanish-American war broke out he resigned his position as Assistant Secretary of the Navy to lead the famous "Rough Riders". He returned from the war a national hero.

Roosevelt's motto while president was "Speak softly but Carry a Big Stick." In accordance with this he fought dishonesty in government and industry. Roosevelt was very interested in conservation. He was once shown in a cartoon holding a bear cub, and since his nickname was Teddy, a toy manufacturer made a stuffed bear and called a "Bear" in honor of the President.

While Roosevelt was president, the Pure Food and Drug Act was Passed, Work began on the 1st model t Ford went on sale, and Oklahoma became the 46th state.
