Lyndon Baines Johnson

Years in Office: 1963 to 1969

Lyndon Baines Johnson was born very poor. After high school he decided he had enough schooling and worked on a road building crew. Finally he realized that his parents had been right, he did need more graduation he taught at Houston High School for 2 years. At age 24 he quit teaching and entered politics as a secretary to a Texas Congressman. Later Johnson was elected as a Congressman and then a senator from Texas.

When he entered World War II, Johnson was the first member of Congress to go on active duty. He served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy and was awarded the Sliver Star for bravery.

When Johnson was President, we became deeply involved in Vietnam and three U.S. astronauts became the first to orbit the moon, the 25th Amendment was added to the Constitution, this clarified the role of Vice-President in the event of the death or disability of a President and it gave him the right to choose a new Vice-President.

Although Johnson was elected by one of the largest majorities in our century, the anti-war movement and race-riots reduced his popular so much that he didn't seek a 2nd term of his own in 1968.
