Flag History

The flag's design dates back to the late 19th century and played a role in Bulgaria's struggle for independence. The current tricolor design was officially adopted on April 16, 1879. Flag Symbolism

The national flag of Bulgaria consists of three horizontal stripes of equal width: white at the top, green in the middle, and red at the bottom. The colors of the Bulgarian flag are associated with historical and cultural symbolism. The interpretation of these colors is as follows:

Anthem History It was written and composed by a Bulgarian student in 1885, as he went off to fight in the Serbo-Bulgarian war.

Before the fall of the communist government in 1991-92, a third verse was added to "Mila Rodino", referencing Moscow's allegiance to Bulgaria, but this was removed after the communists were removed from government.
