旗帜历史: 这一设计的旗帜于19世纪初被采用作为教宗国的商船旗。旗帜的颜色取自圣伯多禄的钥匙,这些钥匙象征着通往天国的钥匙,也是教宗权威的标志。自14世纪以来,交叉的钥匙与教宗三重冕一直是教宗国的徽章。虽然官方规定的比例为1:1,但梵蒂冈城实际悬挂的旗帜比例为2:3。
