Thomas Jefferson

Years in Office: 1801 to 1809

Thomas Jefferson was a plantation owner. His plantation, Monticello, means "Little Mountain" in Indian Language. Jefferson was also a lawyer, an inventor, and a famous architect. He was one of the first farmers to use machinery. His home at Monticello is filled with his inventions.

Jefferson was good at everything he tried, and the three he most proud of were: Author of the Declaration of Independence, Author of the Statue of Virginia for Religious Freedom, and founder of University of Virginia. When Jefferson was president, Ohio was admitted to the union as the 17th state. Jefferson also doubled the land area of our country with the Louisiana Purchase from France.

Other events during Jefferson's term as President were the establishment of West Point Military Academy to train our army officers, the first successful steamboat was built by Robert Fulton, and Zebulon Pike discovered the famous peak in Colorado named after him. (Pike's Peak) Thomas Jefferson was the first president to be inaugurated in Washington D.C.
