Millard Fillmore

Years in Office: 1850 to 1853

Millard Fillmore was born in a log cabin. Hid parents were poor farmers. At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to a clothing maker. He hated his work and his master so bad he worked on his father's farm and studied to become a lawyer. His tutors name was Miss Abigail Powers and she encouraged him to go into politics. In 1826 they were married.

Fillmore's most important contribution to the country was to delay the Civil War by passing the Compromise of 1850. This provided the for run-away slaves to their owners and abolished slavery in Washington D.C. It also organized the territories of Utah and New Mexico with no reference to slavery and admitted California to the Union as a free state. The city of Fillmore in Millard County, Utah, is named for this President.
