Martin Van Buren

Years in Office: 1827 to 1841

Martin Van Buren was the first president born under the United States flag, the previous presidents were born while we were still English colonies. Van Buren was a lawyer (he entered law school at 15). Van Buren was not a popular president. His fondness for elegant and high fashioned clothes made people dislike him, since the country was having a depression and many people were out of work. His enemies gave him the name "Red Fox of Kinderhook".

The most important contribution Van Buren made as President were: Charles Goodyear discovered how to vulcanize rubber in 1839, the first steamship crossed the ocean, the worlds first postage stamp was issued in England in 1840 No new states were added to the Union.
