John Tyler

Years in Office: 1841 to 1845

John Tyler was the first Vice President to inherit the office of President. His professions were lawyer and planter. His plantation was called "Sherwood Forest"; Tyler was not a well-liked president.

He did not support the polices of any political party including his own Whig party. While Tyler was president, Kit Carson and John C. Freemont explored as far west as California, the Oregon Trail opened, China opened its ports for open trade, and Samuel Morse invented the telegraph. The 27th state, Florida, was admitted to the Union.
