James Monroe

Years in Office: 1817 to 1825

James Monroe was a planter and lawyer. His two homes are named "Ash Lawn" and "Oak Hill". Monroe was so popular that his two terms where named "The Era of Good Feeling".

During Monroe's administration, the states of Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, and Missouri were added to the Union to make 24 total states in the United States.

While Monroe was president he passed "The Missouri Compromise" which limited the westward expansion of slavery. He purchased Florida from Spain and he gave his name to one of our nation's most important documents: The Monroe Doctrine. This doctrine stated that the American continents were no longer open to colonization and that there must be no European interference with American nations.
