Harry S. Truman

Years in Office: 1945 to 1953

For the first 33 years of Harry Truman's life he was a farmer. When World War II came along he enlisted for the army. After the war, he tried several businesses, all of which failed, so he studied law and then entered politics. He served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri for 10 years. Truman became President while we were still at war with Germany and Japan.

During his first few weeks in office, Germany surrendered. He than made one of the most difficult decisions made by a president, to drop the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan. This forced them to surrender, thus ending World War II.

Other Events that took place while Truman was in office were the United Nations was organized, we entered the Korean War as part of the United Nations force to halt Civil War in the country, and the 22nd Amendment was added to the Constitution which limited Presidents to two elected terms.
