Grover Cleveland

Years in Office: 1885 to 1889 1893 to 1897

Grover Cleveland was our only president to serve 2 non-seductive terms. He was also the 1st president to be married in the White House. Cleveland was the son of a minister who died when Grover studied law and became a successful attorney. Cleveland was an honest president and didn't hesitate to veto bills that he considered a raid on the U.S. Treasury. His motto was "a public office is a public trust."

When Cleveland was president, France gave us the Statue of Liberty as a symbol of friendship between the two countries. Cleveland defeated Benjamin Harrison in the 1892 election to become our 24th president.

When Cleveland was president the 2nd time Utah was made the 45th state, Henry Ford's 1st car appeared on the streets of Detroit in 1893, the Chicago World's Fair featured the 1st Ferris wheel and the 1st fairgrounds lighted by electricity, and Thomas A. Edison opened the 1st motion picture studio.
