Calvin Coolidge

Years in Office: 1923 to 1929

Calvin Coolidge was a shy, silent lawyer. His nickname "Silent Cal" suited him well. He issued few unnecessary public statements and rarely wasted a word. His campaign slogan was "Keep Cool with Coolidge".

Coolidge was a very popular President and could have served a second term but refused. His statement on the subject was "I do not choose to run for President in 1929."

When Coolidge was president, Charles A. Lindbergh made the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, two U.S. Army bi-planes made the first around the world flight, the first diesel locomotive began operation in New York, and the first talking motion picture was made. The title of this movie was "The Jazz Singer" and starred Al Jolson.
