Andrew Jackson

Years in Office: 1829 to 1837

Andrew Jackson was the first President to be born in a log cabin. He was an orphan and at the age of 18 he fought in the Revolutionary war and was captured by the British. While he was a prisoner a British officer slashed his arm and face with his saber. After the Revolutionary war, Jackson studied to be a lawyer and he built a beautiful plantation in Nashville, Tennessee, called "The Hermitage". When the war of 1812 came, Jackson led the American forces at battle of New Orleans to victory against the British.

This made him a national hero and earned his nickname "Old Hickory". While he was president the first the first daily newspaper was published in New York in 1833, the McCormick reaper was invented and the Battle of the Alamo took Place. The states of Arkansas and Michigan were added to the Union making a total of 26 States.
