Diet
In Sierra Leone, the local diet is diverse and influenced by the country's rich cultural heritage and natural resources. Here are some components of the traditional Sierra Leonean diet:
Rice: Rice is a staple food in Sierra Leone and is typically served with various sauces, stews, or soups. It's often accompanied by protein sources such as fish, chicken, beef, or goat.
Cassava: Cassava is another staple crop in Sierra Leone. It is often pounded into a starchy paste called foofoo or made into a dough-like consistency known as attieke, similar to couscous.
Plantains: Plantains are commonly eaten either fried, boiled, or mashed. They are a popular side dish or snack.
Sweet potatoes: Sweet potatoes are widely consumed and can be boiled, roasted, or fried. They are often served alongside other dishes or eaten on their own.
Groundnut (peanut) stew: Groundnut stew, also known as peanut stew, is a popular dish made with groundnuts, vegetables, and sometimes meat or fish. It's typically served with rice or another starchy staple.
Fish and seafood: Given Sierra Leone's coastal location, fish and seafood are abundant and widely consumed. Fish is often grilled, fried, or stewed and served with rice or other starches.
Vegetables: Various vegetables such as okra, spinach, eggplant, and tomatoes are used in Sierra Leonean cuisine, either as ingredients in stews or as side dishes.
Palm oil: Palm oil is a common cooking ingredient in Sierra Leone and is used to add flavor and color to dishes such as stews and soups.
Tropical fruits: Sierra Leone is blessed with various tropical fruits, including mangoes, bananas, pineapples, papayas, and citrus fruits. These fruits are enjoyed fresh or used in desserts and beverages.
Mealtime
The largest meal is eaten at midday. The staple for the noon meal is
foo-foo, a dough-like paste made from cassava pounded into flour. Foo-Foo is eaten with a spicy dish of leafy greens with tripe (sheep or goat stomach), fish, beef, salt pork, or chicken called
plasa or
plavar sauce.
Jollof rice is also a popular dish.
