Flag History
Before it became the national flag of Latvia, the flag was used by the home guard of Cesis. It was brought back by Latvian university students in 1870.

| Anthem History | "Dievs, Sveti Latviju!" was originally written for an entry in a national singing festival in 1873, and that year became the national anthem of Latvia until Soviet occupation in 1940. Upon re-establishment of independence 50 years later, it was once again adopted as the official state anthem |
