Coconuts, bananas, and cassava are the main food crops. The best land is used for commercial crops such as vanilla, cloves and perfume plants so much of the food must be imported. During meal times, the husband usually eats alone at the dinner table or living room whereas the children and their mothers eat from the kitchen. The man may eat with a parent or friend at the table. Males eating seperate from females is a show of dignity as well as authority.
