Flag History | The colors are those of the flags of the principal signatories to the agreement between Brunei and the United Kingdom: yellow - the sultan, Pengiran Bendahara - white, and Pengiran Pemancha - black. The mast and pedestal represent the three levels of government and the four feathers symbolize justice, tranquility, peace, and prosperity. The hands represent that the government preserves and promotes the welfare of the citizens. The crescent symbolizes Islam, the state religion. |

Flag Symbolism | The flag is yellow with two diagonal bands of white (top, almost double width) and black starting from the upper hoist side; the national emblem in red is superimposed at the center; the emblem includes a swallow-tailed flag on top of a winged column within an upturned crescent above a scroll and flanked by two upraised hands. The state motto is written in Arabic script and means "Always render service with God's guidance". The name of the state appears on the ribbon. |
