Capital - history | Laid out in 1957. Became the capital in 1960. The name of the capital and country come from brasilium, the Latin name of a red dyewood imported to Rome from the Orient. A similar wood was found in Brazil by European settlers, and the country became known as terra de brasil, meaning "land of red dyewood". |
